Yahangala Ancient Royal Temple, Bandagiriya, Hambantota
Yahangala Ancient Royal Temple claims a history of two thousand and two hundred years. Yahangala Ancient Royal Temple (Sinhala: Yahangala Purāņa Rajamahā Vihāraya) is situated in the mid of the village, Bandagiriya in Hambantota district of Southern Sri Lanka. It is located nearly two hundred and fifty-five kilometers away from Colombo. The drive through Colombo – Kataragama route will take five-hour journey.
Geographical Setting
Yahangala ancient royal temple is situated in the middle of the village Bandagiriya. Bandagiriya is in Hambantota district. Bandagiriya was established as an agricultural region by the late Prime Minister of Sri Lanka, S.W.R.D Bandaranayake in 1956. The village was inhabited by people in 1957. Till today, the village is maintained as an agro-centered locale.
As the temple is situated near the Bandagiriya-Hambanthota Road and in the middle of the village, it has easy access. According to archeological data, the land coverage of the temple is fifteen acres. A large portion of the land is covered with an expansive rock.
