The Main Pagoda (Pot-shaped Pagoda)
The most important place is the Main pagoda. The shape of the pagoda is common in the southern region. Out of the standard models of constructing pagodas, this pagoda is recognized as pot-shaped (Ghatakara). The width of the base is 41.8 feet length is 80.00 feet. And it is 9.00 feet high. The base is constructed on the rock. The height of the padoda is 13.00 feet and is of the circumference of 90 feet. The stupa was covered by wilderness as of the 19th century. With efforts of Sri Lanka Archeological Department, it was renovated in the middle 20th century.
As to the features of the pagoda, it displays a complicated construction. It is made of bricks and they are also unique to this place only. There are three pesa rings (pesa valalu).
The first ring is of the height of eleven inches (11), and the second and the third rings are of the height of 1.8 feet. Near the pagoda, there is stone pillar, which could be a upasthambha, and on the top of it, there are eight lotus petals carved. It can be surmised that the pillar could have been on the top f the pagoda and later had fallen onto the ground. This pillar is of the circumference of 2.9 feet and height is of 7.7 feet.
There was stone slab near the main pagoda. The inference was that it could be a pedestal for offering flowers etc to the pagoda. Recently, it was lifted and prepared for the offerings. This slab is of 3.8 feet and length is of 5.00 feet. Height is of 04.00 inches.
